Thanks Al. You should join us. Me and Zayne are going. I guess I need to find some sort of toilet.[/quote]

Yeah, on a wet year like this the mosquitoes will be thick.

Do you guys have a toilet? I have a PETT toilet you can borrow. You'd have to get some WAG bags. Of course, if you only camp at Rubicon Springs there are outhouses there so you'd be OK. But, if you want to take a john and some WAG bags just in case, I have one you can use.

I might do this too, since I already carry a 5-gal bucket with spare fluids in it.

Also at Big 5 in Bako... we stopped on the way to the Rubicon and I was able to find some there.

Speaking of the Rubicon.... it was amazingly fun! I will write up a report after some much required sleep and hopefully I can get the pics and vids from the group I was with. I took a few, but was having way too much fun wheeling to be bothered too much with it.

I am going to try and figure out how to afford a second trip in a couple of weeks with you guys. My estimation was it cost me 400 bones in gas alone.

But to the point.... the bugs are thick! Get deet 100 or be sorry. I had it and didn't get one bite that I can tell, one of the other guys had some 30% or 40% deet spray and was eaten alive.

It was my first time... a bit of advice if you like to sleep, don't make camp at the Little Sluice... while it was a nice spot (large flat granite areas) and close to Spider Lake, it was party central and those guys went till almost five in the morning.... I think the last night run on the Little Sluice was at about 4:30am. From what I saw, it was not doable without a buggy. I saw plenty buggies go through and maybe one or two didn't flop.... even on the "easy" line. It was the only thing I didn't try.

Glad you had a good time Brad! Some of us are taking our kids (ill probably take my daughter), so definately want to avoid the 4am action.

Imm sold on the 100% DEET to; no substitute.

Back in the late 90s, a jeep on 35s could easily go through little sluice. They sure did a lot of "trail modification" on that one!

Yeah, that's the one I have. It folds pretty compact and so is easy to pack, very simple. Whatever john you use you'll need WAG bags. You're welcome to use it.

Randy was thinking that the party and guys wheeling at the box that night were akin to the old 'pirates of the rubicon.' They were having some serious fun. One of the guys flopped and they pushed him back over... two seconds later he was saying something while reving his motor trying a new line... people were asking what he was saying and it sounded like, "I can't steer." After a few seconds he shut down his motor and said, "No! I didn't say that, I said I split my beer!" That was the crowd at the box.... so be forewarned. Ten or more years ago I would have thought that was the best place to stop, but not so much now. It was fun to watch for a while, but it never really ended.

Randy was also saying the trail was different and a lot harder, the hardest he's seen it. Not just the box, but the entire trail. He's run it about ten times, but its been ten or so years since he'd be out there. There are some easier lines sometimes, but not always... there are a few spots that have great hard lines to take. Aside from not running the box, everything was doable with 37s except for one optional line I was trying. After 20 minutes or so of holding up the group trying to get over it, I gave up. I am pretty sure I would have made it over at some point, but it was hard getting the right line with my puny 37s. Randy thought 40s would have made a huge difference. We had a guy on 35s and he did pretty well. He got hung up a lot and I had to strap him several times... but I feel it was more driver error than anything (he's a bit new to wheeling, but had a lot of will to try almost everything and no complaints came out of him when he banged and scraped).

"Trail modification" = dynamite! Gotta love that shit. I guess with all the serious buggies out there (like Richard's), they needed to make it a little harder.

Carnage was pretty minimal, aside from lots of scratches and scrapes. Bent rear shock, screwed up tie rod end, torn soft top, and broken sway bar link.

They were handing out boxes of six for free to anyone that asked for them at the Loon trail head. They also had mesh trash bags and spill containment kits, for free as well.

There were a couple of cops patrolling the trail, we saw them a lot the first day, but not after. They were writing several tickets. I guess open container/DUI and seat belts were the biggies that they seem to get a lot of people on. I am not sure about seat belts, but I'd gather that at least 50% of the rigs we passed were drinking while running the trail... and almost everyone pulled over to rest was downing them. It was pretty hot out there.

Has the gas prices gone up that much? I spent half that much last year & ran 3 other trails. How much fuel for the trail alone?

Could be. Round-trip from Oxnard, with the trail ride, is over 1,000 miles of driving. Fully armored JK on 37s/beadlocks running mostly uphill overloaded with weight at elevation + almost $4/gal gas adds up pretty quick. I am expecting to use about $300 in gas.

Fully loaded going over the grapevine, I get less than 10MPG! 14MPG on flat Freeway. I was getting 16-17MPG with 35s.

Yeah... serious and that isn't even covering the tank used on the trail. I had a big enemy though, I was toting a big ass cooler on my trail rack and I think it killed my gas mileage pretty good... easy fix, get rid of the LOD and get a PSC BFH rear. Also probably not in my favor is that I just got a Flashpaq and didn't set it up for economy before the trip. If you were to subtract those two, I still would have been out 300 or more. From Oxnard to Bako round trip is probably two tanks, so you guys can subtract that.

The partying at the Box (Little Sluice) has been going on for years. It's one of the biggest points of contention among various wheeling groups trying to kept the 'Con open. Lot's of people wheel their buggies in to that point and party and don't run the rest of the trail, and some think that is jeopardizing the trail for those who are actually running the trail like it is meant to be.

What has mostly kept the trail open is that it's a county road, so seatbelt laws and drinking laws can apply. It's nice that the rangers and deputies are out there, better to have it patrolled than closed.

I dont understand why cant you take a dump in the woods and cover it? I am pretty sure all toilet paper is highly biodegradable. (fast rate) They are concerned about the eye sore? cover it problem solved. It is free fertilizer for crying out loud. I am all about trash free woods. I like to view the great outdoors as the good lord intended. Which is why i like being out in the woods away from pavement and buildings. but the good lord also didnt intend for you to be carrying around your own feces. That is a good way to spread human disease. remember the black plague? lol jk

The bottom line; the water company and enviros threatened to sue the Forestry service to close the Rubicon trail down - the FS rolled over in fear - the off-road community fought for some kind of compromise - and this is what we must do now to keep it open.

Even through dangerous levels of human waste concentrations have never been found in the water, they used the fear of it happening in the future as a basis for the law suit. This is just one of hundreds of approaches the enviros have taken to close the trail down, everything from habitat destruction to endangered species. No doubt, one day they will find a reason that sticks. Until then, we have to follow the rules and enjoy the trail while we can.

On another note, something had to be done in the Spider lake area. The little sluice/spider lake area had become party central, attracting all types, many of which did not respect the trail, leaving others to wheel out with 10s of thousands of pounds of trash. People illegally modified the little sluice to make it an Extreme obstacle for the buggies to play in. Much of that area around Spider Lake is private property and the land owners got sick of picking up people's trash. The last time time I ran the Rubicon, one of the trail guides told us that the Rubicon gets over 70,000# of human poop a year. Id imagine that herds of animals in the wild do much worse than that, but human poop is just nasty :lol3:

I agree with you... if people would take a shovel with them, dig a 12-18 inch deep hole, and then cover their waste, this would not be an issue... problem is that people don't take that shovel and just leave their waste on the surface.

You should have seen Spider Lake before they closed it. Shit and paper piles like a huge flower garden......it was nasty. The volunteer cleanup crews on end of season work parties had to clean that crap up, I have friends that ended up with crap duty and they said it was pretty bad work. One of the problems is that the last 2/3 of the trail is mostly rock, with relatively little dirt cover over it, and there are just too many people. While many of us will discreetly bury our shit, it has already been overwhelmingly proven that many people will not. Each group dealing with their own waste is the only reasonable solution.

Now, there is no law that says you can't bury your shit, so if that's what you want to do go ahead. However, it is essential to encourage groups to take their own measures to deal with waste.
